The amazing little coca leaf

We all know that the coca leaf is the main ingredient in cocaine, but I never knew just how versatile this leaf really is. It seems like it can be put into just about anything and there are plans underway to bring a whole range of coca leaf products. I really don’t know, but in this era of health conscious eating and living, anything is possible. It seems that they have already made coca leaf shampoos, teas, face creams and cookies. I never knew there were so many uses for the coca leaf and thought it was only good for curbing hunger pangs and altitude sickness, boy was I wrong.

Imagine coca cake, coca cookies, coca wine, and coca sweets. At the inauguration of the new President of Bolivia, Evo Morales, those were on the menu. President Morales want to bring about a cottage industry of coca leaf products and push for acceptance of these throughout the world. Ok, ok, it could look like those who wish to make marijuana mainstream, you know the hippies who go around telling all the wonderful uses for weed, yeah right. But it seems like the coca leaf is actually pretty good.

I love it in coca-cola, but I never knew that three Harvard researchers — James Duke, David Aulik and Timothy Plowman — came to conclusions in an extensive 1975 study that said 100 grams of coca leaf matched or exceeded the U.S. recommended daily dose of calcium, iron, phosphorous, vitamin A and riboflavin. Many poor children lack those basic nutrients. Likewise, research shows that coca leaves are neither addictive nor harmful. Sounds like a win-win situation.
